Selenium Sulfide Hair Loss

Selenium sulfide is a fairly common anti-infective agent that is used in the treatment of itchy and flaking scalps. Is there a connection between selenium sulfide and hair loss?

Selenium sulfide is a compound containing the element selenium. Selenium in a rare element and rarely occurs in its natural state. It is very similar to sulfur and has an Atomic number of 34. It is extremely toxic in large doses, but trace amounts are considered necessary in virtually every animal cell. The compound, selenium sulfide is a very common anti-infective agent with several medical uses. Can selenium sulfide cause hair loss?

The short answer to this question is yes. Hair loss is listed as a possible side effect of the use of selenium sulfide. It should be noted, however, that this side effect is considered rare and is one of several conditions that should be reported to a doctor should they occur. If the product is used according to instructions, it should not be a serious concern at all.

Selenium sulfide is used in the treatment of itchy and flaking scalps. It removes the dry scaly particles that are commonly called dandruff or seborrhea. It is used in a lotion form as a shampoo. It is very important to follow the usage directions carefully. Normally, it is used twice a week for the first two weeks and then once a week for up to the next four depending on results. When it is used on skin infections like tinea versicolor, which is a fungal infection, it is applied once a day for seven days.



It should never be used on cut or scratched skin and care needs to be taken to avoid getting it into the eyes when being used as a shampoo. Normally, rinsing with clear water for an extended period of time will wash it safely from the eyes. There are several adverse reactions and side effects that are listed as possible. As with any medications, if a side effect should occur use should be discontinued and a doctor consulted. Severe reactions could indicate an allergic reaction or other serious condition and a doctor should be consulted at once.

Under normal circumstances, the use of selenium sulfide should do what it is intended to do and not lead to excessive hair loss. It is, however, listed as a possible side effect and this should make a user alerted to the possibility. If any hair loss is noticed as a result, simply discontinuing use should solve the problem.
